Maps of Lake Geneva, where France and Switzerland meet: location, geology, depth, catchment areas, transport networks… Zoom in with maps and practical information on the largest lake in the Alps.

Maps of Lake Geneva
Sometimes called Lake Geneva, Lake Geneva stretches along the French-Swiss border between Geneva, Lausanne, Montreux, Evian and Thonon-les-Bains.
At 73 kilometres long, it is the largest Alpine lake in Western Europe. It plays a central role in the landscape, the economy and regional and cross-border trade. Here are some maps of Lake Geneva to (re)discover it in geography.
Global map of the lake
The general map of Lake Geneva provides an overview of its crescent-shaped contours between the two countries, along with the administrative divisions, cantons in Switzerland and département in France. It highlights the position of the main towns, the cantons (Geneva, Vaud, Valais) and the département (Haute-Savoie), the Franco-Swiss border, the Rhône river and the main tributary rivers, as well as the lake’s depth and designations.

Wind map of Lake Geneva
As well as its landscapes, Lake Geneva is marked by a varied wind regime, which gives rhythm to its surface and conditions navigation, weather and the atmosphere of its shores. The wind map shows the main routes taken by the air currents that are typical of the Lake Geneva region.

Tectonic map
The Lake Geneva basin is the result of a complex geological history, marked by glacial erosion and movements of several tectonic units in the Alps and Jura. This simplified map illustrates the major faults and the structure of the lake’s subsoil.

Bathymetric map
The bathymetry of Lake Geneva details the underwater topography by means of contour lines indicating the depth of the lake. It reveals depths of up to 310 metres in the eastern part of the lake, known as the Grand Lac. Bathymetric maps are used for navigation, ecological research and monitoring the quality of aquatic environments.

Map of the Lake Geneva basin
The Lake Geneva catchment area encompasses a vast hydrographic network that feeds the lake, notably from the Rhône and several other mountain rivers.
The map of the basin identifies the tributary rivers of the Rhône and Lake Geneva, the main peaks of the adjoining Alps and its geographical location in the region between France and Switzerland.
