What does global warming mean for the coastline of northern France? Find the answer on a map, with a simulation of rising sea levels along the French Channel and North Sea coast:

rising water levels in the English Channel and North Sea (France)

Rising water levels in the Channel and North Sea

The English Channel and North Sea coastline in mainland France covers almost 2,000 kilometres of coastline, from Brittany to the Opal Coast, with higher risk areas near estuaries, beaches and marshes.

For the Channel and North Sea, two regions are involved: Normandy and Hauts-de-France.

Already affected by coastal erosion, the Channel and North Sea coasts are also likely to undergo significant changes, particularly for residents living near theOpale or Contentin marshes, the Bay of the Somme or Mont Saint-Michel, or the Seine estuary.

Climate Central map

The simulation of rising sea levels in the English Channel and North Sea Climate Central, with a focus on the French coast and several possible factors:

  • In how many years?
  • How high is the water level?
  • What increase in temperature (global warming)?
  • What climate and energy choices (warming choices)?
  • How much are the ice caps and glaciers (ice sheets) melting?
  • What new data (elevation dataset)
