Trains in Switzerland
Switzerland has one of the best rail networks in the world, with several companies including Swiss Federal Railways (SBB), a company owned by the Swiss Confederation.
The Swiss rail network comprises 5124 kilometres of track. Trains and railways in Switzerland are managed by several companies, depending on the territory, including 4 main companies:
- Swiss Federal Railways, CFF (or SBB in German and FFS in Italian), with around 3,000 kilometres of railway lines.
- The Lötschberg railway, BLS, centralised in the Berne region with 449 kilometres of line in operation
- The Rhaetian Railway, RHB, in the canton of Grisons, for less than 400 kilometres of track.
- The Matterhorn-Gotthard-Bahn, MGB, between Valais, Ticino and Grisons with 144 kilometres of track.
Given the country’s Alpine terrain, Switzerland’s railways are dotted with numerous engineering structures: tunnels, such as the Simplon, Gotthard and Lötschberg, and numerous viaducts and stations at high altitude.
In 2025, 1.43 million people travelled by train in Switzerland every day, and 26.1 billion tonne-kilometres were recorded for rail freight in 2023. Switzerland’s rail network has thus established itself as a major means of transporting the country’s population, tourists and goods.
